Dermaplaning is a cosmetic treatment in which dead skin cells and peach fuzz are removed with a scalpel. While dermaplaning removes fine facial hairs, the procedure differs from shaving in terms of the tools used, the amount of skin removed, and the person performing the procedure.
The benefits of dermaplaning depend on your skin type, skin tone, medical history, and the knowledge of the professional performing your treatment.
The benefits of dermaplaning are cosmetic and may include:

Most people's skin responds well to dermaplaning.
Dermaplaning isn’t recommended if you have inflammatory skin conditions such as:
- Acne
- Severe Rosacea or Rosacea that is inflamed
- Psoriasis
- Eczema
- Sunburn
If you’re taking isotretinoin, a prescription medication used to treat severe acne, you should wait 6 months after you stop taking it to try dermaplaning.
You can have dermaplaning treatment every 3 to 4 weeks. Most people average every 4-8 weeks.
Most people have little to no irritation or reaction. Short-term side effects may include:
- Red skin from the exfoliation process
- Soreness similar to wind burn
- A burning or tingling sensation for about 48 hours after the procedure
It is a myth that your hair will grow back thicker or darker after dermaplaning or shaving. While hair that grows back may feel coarser at first, it is only because it is short and cut. It will get softer over time as it gets a bit longer.
Taking care of your skin care is essential after dermaplaning. Be gentle with your skin for 48-72 hrs following your treatment.
- Keep your skin well hydrated with an appropriate moisturizer.
- Avoid harsh cleaners, toners or exfoliants.
- Apply sunscreen daily.
- Avoid direct sunlight for 72 hrs.
- Avoid heavy makeup as it can clog pores.
